The Indian Army’s Eastern Command and Tri Shakti Corps, in collaboration with Fitistan Ek Fit Bharat, organized the first Sikkim Soldierathon on October 27 at Palzor Stadium, drawing over 1,600 runners for half marathon, 10 km, and 5 km races. This race, the largest in Sikkim to date, aims to spotlight Sikkim’s potential for sports tourism and showcase its beauty, culture, and heritage.
Major General Amit Khabtiyal flagged off the race, with notable personalities like Fitistan founder Shilpa Bhagat, marathoner Amar Subba, and Dronacharya awardee Sandhya Gurung in attendance. Major General Khabtiyal welcomed participants and encouraged them to embrace sportsmanship, affirming the Army’s support for Sikkim’s athletes and fitness culture.
Fitistan Managing Director Shilpa Bhagat commended the Army’s role in nation-building and highlighted Fitistan’s commitment to Prime Minister Modi’s Fit India vision. The Soldierathon tagline, “Run for Sikkim – Run with Soldiers,” resonated with locals, underscoring the spirit of unity and patriotism.
After the race, Indian Army soldiers and Sikkim Tourism Department members performed traditional dances, including Khukri, Bhangra, and Gatka, captivating the audience. Soldierathon founder Major Surendra Poonia, who started the marathon under the guidance of former President Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, thanked the Sikkim administration and NSS volunteers for their support.
