India, Vietnam Elevate Bilateral Ties To Enhanced Comprehensive Strategic Partnership: PM Modi

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday announced that India and Vietnam have elevated their bilateral ties to an Enhanced Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, marking a significant step in deepening cooperation between the two countries.

The announcement was made during a joint press interaction with Vietnam’s President To Lam following their talks at Hyderabad House.

Prime Minister Modi described Vietnam as a key pillar of India’s Act East policy and Vision Mahasagar.

Highlighting the trajectory of ties, PM noted that Vietnam became India’s first Comprehensive Strategic Partner in ASEAN during his visit a decade ago. Since then, relations have expanded across sectors including trade, technology and tourism.

PM Narendra Modi said the new upgrade builds on strong civilisational links and reflects the steady progress made in bilateral engagement. He further welcomed President To Lam’s early visit to India after assuming office, calling it a reflection of the importance Vietnam places on ties with India.

The Prime Minister pointed out that the Vietnamese leader began his visit from Bodh Gaya, underlining shared cultural and spiritual heritage. He also recalled that over 1.5 crore people in Vietnam had viewed Buddhist relics exhibited there in 2025.

PM Modi emphasised that both countries share a common outlook in the Indo-Pacific region and will continue to strengthen defence and security cooperation to promote peace, stability and rule of law.

The Prime Minister added that India aims to expand its engagement with ASEAN with Vietnam’s support.

PM Modi also thanked Vietnam for condemning the terror attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, and for backing India’s fight against terrorism.

Amid global economic challenges, the Prime Minister said India and Vietnam are emerging as among the fastest-growing economies, driven by governance reforms and human capital.
