India, Singapore Strengthen Ties Amid Global Uncertainty

India and Singapore are deepening their partnership as New Delhi recalibrates its diplomacy to achieve clear economic and strategic objectives in an unpredictable world.

In an era marked by fragile supply chains, volatile trade policies, and climate challenges, India is prioritising partnerships with trusted and strategically positioned countries. Singapore remains central to this strategy, according to a report by India Narrative.

Third Ministerial Roundtable Adds Momentum

The third India–Singapore Ministerial Roundtable (ISMR) in New Delhi is set to boost cooperation under the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.

Indian ministers S Jaishankar, Nirmala Sitharaman, Ashwini Vaishnaw, and Piyush Goyal are meeting a high-level Singaporean delegation led by Deputy Prime Minister Gan Kim Yong and Foreign Minister Vivian Balakrishnan.

Launched in 2022, the ISMR serves as a platform to identify concrete areas for expanding and deepening bilateral ties.

India and Singapore are actively collaborating in semiconductors, green infrastructure, digital integration, advanced manufacturing, healthcare innovation, and maritime connectivity.

The partnership gained fresh impetus in 2024 with the launch of the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership. For India, aligning with Singapore’s logistics and financial networks connects it to global value chains with lower operational and political risks.

Through the Semiconductor Ecosystem Partnership, both countries aim to create an alternative to existing chip-making hubs. The initiative seeks to make supply chains more secure and resilient while positioning India as a critical technology player.

Singapore’s Strategic Value for India

Singapore’s balanced foreign policy, which includes strong trade links with China alongside security and technology partnerships with other nations, makes it a valuable partner in India’s rebalancing strategy.

This approach offers India a non-confrontational entry into ASEAN markets and Indo-Pacific frameworks, enhancing its influence while benefiting Singapore with a growing partner that has significant economic and security capabilities.

Green energy is a major focus for future collaboration. Singapore’s expertise in clean energy financing and technology complements India’s renewable energy ambitions. Joint projects include solar power, green hydrogen, and sustainable urban infrastructure.

The Green Digital Shipping Corridor, launched in 2025, aims to decarbonise ports and shipping routes, aligning with evolving environmental standards. This initiative supports India’s climate commitments while safeguarding its economic interests.

Both nations are prioritising people-to-people connections through agreements on healthcare, digital health systems, skill development, and education exchange.

By aligning skills and modernising India’s workforce, the two countries are creating a cross-border talent pool equipped for future industries.

As India’s digital economy expands, it is linking to Singapore’s advanced fintech systems, cybersecurity frameworks, and payment infrastructure. This connection enhances cross-border data sharing and financial flows.

This integration improves trade efficiency and bolsters India’s standing as a trusted technology partner in the Indo-Pacific.

Strengthening the Indo-Pacific Through Cooperation

The broader vision for the India–Singapore partnership is to showcase how middle powers can work together to provide regional public goods.

By ensuring open sea lanes, reliable supply chains, and sustainable infrastructure, the two nations are advancing their interests as well as the Indo-Pacific’s stability. This supports India’s Act East Policy, which focuses on economic and strategic options rather than conflict.
