Prime Minister Narendra Modi extended his congratulations to Sushila Karki on her appointment as Nepal’s interim Prime Minister, reaffirming India’s dedication to the peace and prosperity of its Himalayan neighbour.
Taking to X, PM Modi posted, “I extend my best wishes to Right Hon. Mrs. Sushila Karki on assuming office as the Prime Minister of the Interim Government of Nepal. India remains firmly committed to the peace, progress and prosperity of the people of Nepal.”
Karki, aged 73, made history on Friday as Nepal’s first female Prime Minister, sworn in following the fall of the previous government led by KP Sharma Oli. Her appointment comes after a turbulent political climate, shaped by widespread Gen-Z protests that called for change in leadership.
Protest leaders and constitutional experts endorsed former Chief Justice Sushila Karki to hold the post of the premiership after lengthy consultations.
President Ram Chandra Poudel administered her oath of office, reflecting a consensus amid growing political tensions.
Karki’s appointment, however, poses constitutional questions.
Nepal’s Constitution requires that the Prime Minister be a member of the House of Representatives.
Since Karki is neither a member of the lower house nor the upper house, her appointment is based on the ‘principle of necessity’.
Additionally, constitutional provisions restrict former Chief Justices from holding government office, creating a legal grey area around her premiership.
Despite these challenges, Karki’s selection signals a new phase in Nepal’s political journey, with hopes pinned on her leadership to calm unrest and guide the nation towards lasting peace.
