India has reaffirmed its commitment to the Global South while actively promoting national interests across a rapidly shifting international landscape, according to the Ministry of External Affairs’ (MEA) 2024 annual report.
The report outlines India’s dynamic and pragmatic foreign policy under Prime Minister Narendra Modi, which has significantly bolstered the country’s global standing and goodwill.
India hosted the third edition of the Voice of Global South Summit virtually, under the theme ‘An Empowered Global South for a Sustainable Future’.
Prime Minister Modi inaugurated the Heads of State/Government session and proposed a comprehensive Global Development Compact to promote sustainable development across the Global South.
The compact focuses on trade, capacity building, technology sharing, and financial assistance, aiming to create a balanced and empowered development model.
The summit featured participation from 173 dignitaries representing 123 Global South countries, including 21 Heads of State/Government and 34 Foreign Ministers.
This was also the first plurilateral summit hosted by the Prime Minister after assuming office for a historic third term.
Hosting the event within the first 100 days of the new government reflected India’s strategic priority to deepen engagement with the Global South.
In September 2024, Prime Minister Modi addressed the Summit of the Future during the 79th United Nations General Assembly’s High-level Week. He outlined India’s human-centric approach to sustainable development and expressed solidarity with the Global South.
Highlighting the need for equitable and responsible technology use, PM Modi emphasised India’s readiness to share its digital public infrastructure with the world.
He stated, “Reform is the key to relevance,” urging that global actions must align with global ambitions.
The MEA report underlined India’s leadership in driving reforms across multilateral institutions.
India remained committed to expanding its strategic autonomy, advocating for fair global governance, and championing the interests of the Global South within the rules-based international order.
During the G7 Outreach Session held in Italy in June 2024, PM Modi called for a human-centric approach to technology. He underscored India’s commitment to the ‘AI for All’ initiative, stressing that AI should contribute to global welfare and inclusivity.
PM Modi reiterated India’s focus on the Global South, particularly Africa, and highlighted India’s instrumental role in ensuring the African Union’s permanent membership in the G20.
The 2024 MEA report clearly outlines India’s consistent focus on elevating the voice and concerns of the Global South.
Through high-level summits, diplomatic initiatives, and global forums, Prime Minister Modi has positioned India as a leading voice advocating for equity, sustainability, and cooperation among developing nations.
