India–New Zealand FTA Boosts Global Recognition Of Ayush And Traditional Medicine

The Ministry of AYUSH announced that the conclusion of the India–New Zealand Free Trade Agreement marks a decisive advancement in promoting traditional medicine globally.

The agreement positions Ayush systems at the forefront of a new international cooperation framework in holistic healthcare.

The pact expands India’s trade reach while unlocking new avenues for global recognition, professional mobility, and institutional collaboration.

Notably, New Zealand has, for the first time, incorporated a dedicated Health and Traditional Medicine Annexe within an FTA with India. This provision establishes a structured pathway for trade in Ayurveda, yoga, and other traditional healing services.

The agreement formally acknowledges India’s wellness heritage and aligns Ayush practices with indigenous Māori healthcare traditions.

Officials stated that the framework enables market access across multiple service sectors, allowing practitioners and wellness institutions to engage effectively with international markets.

The FTA promotes cooperation across Ayurveda, Yoga, Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha, Sowa-Rigpa, and Homoeopathy. It reinforces India’s leadership in preventive and integrative healthcare systems.

Authorities expect the framework to stimulate medical value travel, encourage academic partnerships, and strengthen research collaboration.

A dedicated visa quota will permit Ayush professionals and yoga instructors to work in New Zealand for extended periods.

The agreement also institutionalises technical cooperation in education, training, and standards development.

By embedding traditional medicine within a modern trade structure, the pact signals a shared commitment to sustainable healthcare. It marks a transformative step in elevating Ayush from national tradition to a globally recognised healthcare model.
