India Granted Women Voting Rights In 1947, Decades Ahead Of Many Democracies: Modi Archive

When India became independent in 1947, women received the right to vote on an equal footing with men. This decision came much earlier than in many long-established democracies, where women had to fight for decades to secure voting rights.

The social media account ‘Modi Archive’ highlighted this historical milestone through a video shared on International Women’s Day.

In a post on X, the Modi Archive noted that India ensured voting rights for women from the very beginning of its democratic journey.

“While some of the world’s oldest democracies took over a century to grant women the right to vote, India gave women universal suffrage in 1947 itself. This was before the legislation, the national mission, the policy frameworks, and the implementation of the Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam, which reserved 33 per cent of Parliament’s seats for women,” the post said.

The account also recalled remarks made by PM Narendra Modi during his tenure as the Chief Minister of Gujarat in 2003, when he raised questions about expanding the role of women in public life.

“Twenty years ago, a Chief Minister was already asking: Why should women’s power remain confined to the family? Why not the Gram Sabha, the district, or every room where decisions are made? The year was 2003. The day was Women’s Day. The leader was Narendra Modi,” the post added.

The video released by the social media handle ‘Modi Archive’ shows PM Narendra Modi, then serving as Chief Minister of Gujarat, speaking about the position of women in India. In his remarks, he questioned the widely held perception that women in Western countries enjoy significantly greater empowerment than those in India.

“There is a narrative spread in our country about different nations of the world, suggesting that women there are far ahead and can do anything they wish,” he said in the address, adding that many people in India often get influenced by such narratives without recognising the country’s own traditions and strengths.

Highlighting historical developments, PM Modi noted that women in several established democracies secured voting rights only after prolonged struggles.

“Sisters, we became independent in 1947. With independence, women in our country naturally received the right to vote. The move surprised many around the world,” he said.

He also noted that in countries such as the US, women had to struggle for decades to secure voting rights. This happened despite those nations having long-established democratic systems.

In contrast, India granted women the right to vote at the time of Independence. It also ensured their participation in grassroots governance structures.

Women have since taken on leadership roles as village heads. They have also served as representatives in local bodies, including Taluka and District Panchayats.

The post also mentioned the recently enacted Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam. The law mandates a 33 per cent reservation for women in Parliament and state legislative assemblies.

In his 2003 remarks, PM Modi emphasised that women’s strength has long been an integral part of India’s social fabric. He said this influence should increasingly extend beyond the household into public life and governance.

The Prime Minister also highlighted the importance of self-help groups and community initiatives in promoting women’s leadership. He said such efforts could help build a broader movement of women’s participation across villages and communities.

According to the remarks, empowering women and encouraging their involvement in decision-making would strengthen governance. It would also help ensure that the benefits of development and welfare reach every section of society.
