India and France on Wednesday inaugurated the Indo-French Centre for AI in Health at All India Institute of Medical Sciences in New Delhi, reinforcing bilateral cooperation in healthcare and advanced technology.
Narendra Modi supported the initiative as part of India’s broader push for responsible and sovereign AI development.
Union Health Minister JP Nadda and Emmanuel Macron formally inaugurated the centre, according to the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.
The Indo-French Centre for AI in Health will promote artificial intelligence-led research, medical training and clinical innovation.
It aims to tackle complex public health challenges through data-driven solutions and interdisciplinary collaboration.
President Macron stressed that India and France must cultivate sovereign AI capacity and skilled talent.
He argued that nations should not depend excessively on a handful of global technology powers.
President Macron highlighted the transformative impact of ethical AI deployment, particularly in healthcare, to improve productivity and accelerate scientific breakthroughs.
He called for responsible AI governance. He urged safeguards to protect children, transparency in algorithms to counter bias and democratic risks, and preservation of linguistic diversity in AI systems. Macron noted that India and France share a common commitment in these areas.
The centre was established under a Joint Memorandum of Understanding between AIIMS New Delhi, Sorbonne University and Paris Brain Institute.
The initiative also involves academic collaboration with the Indian Institute of Technology Delhi and leading French institutions.
The partnership will advance research in artificial intelligence, brain science and global health systems.
The programme builds on ongoing Indo-French cooperation in Digital Health, Antimicrobial Resistance, Human Resources for Health and responsible use of medical data.
The government reaffirmed its resolve to deepen healthcare ties with France.
It aims to leverage innovation, democratic values and shared expertise to strengthen resilient health systems and improve outcomes in India and beyond.
