India Approves Lease Of Two Additional MQ-9 Drones For Navy

The Defence Acquisition Council, chaired by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, approved the lease of two additional MQ-9 drones for the Indian Navy.

The latest acquisition comes five years after India first leased two MQ-9 aircraft in 2020, which have since proven critical for persistent surveillance, intelligence gathering, and maritime security operations.

Defence experts regard the MQ-9 as one of the world’s most capable high-altitude, long-endurance unmanned aircraft systems (UAS), offering enhanced intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) capabilities along India’s borders and across the Indian Ocean region.

The additional drones are expected to further strengthen India’s maritime domain awareness in strategically sensitive waters.

The approval also reflects the growing emphasis by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and US President Donald Trump on expanding defence collaboration, which remains a core pillar of the India–US strategic partnership.

Over the years, defence ties have deepened, with increased interoperability and technology-sharing between the two nations.

Vivek Lall, Chief Executive of General Atomics Global Corporation, has been a key figure in facilitating defence trade and industrial cooperation between India and the United States.

Over two decades, Lall’s engagement with governments and defence industries has enabled India to access advanced US technologies while reinforcing bilateral trust.

Strategic Impact and Key Procurements

Lall has played a pivotal role in several major Indian defence procurements, including:

• Acquisition of 31 MQ-9B aircraft for the Indian Navy, Air Force, and Army,
• 24 MH-60R anti-submarine warfare helicopters,
• Boeing P-8I maritime patrol aircraft,
• AH-64E Apache attack helicopters and CH-47 Chinook transport aircraft,
• 22 Boeing Harpoon anti-ship missiles, and
• 10 C-17 Globemaster III transport aircraft

These collaborations have integrated more than 100 Indian defence companies into global supply chains, boosting domestic industrial capability while supporting US employment and industry.

The expanded induction of MQ-9 drones underscores India’s growing reliance on advanced unmanned systems for both land and maritime security.

With enhanced ISR capabilities, the Indian Navy is better equipped to monitor sensitive regions, strengthen border surveillance, and ensure maritime domain awareness.

The latest lease of MQ-9 aircraft also strengthens India–US defence cooperation, signalling a continued commitment to high-tech defence collaboration and strategic alignment in the Indo-Pacific region.
