India And US Forge Stronger Path For Clean Energy Transition

India and the US are making strides in clean energy innovation and security. Their focus includes advancing clean energy manufacturing and building robust, diversified supply chains. This was announced following a ministerial meeting in Washington, DC, led by US Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm and Indian Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Hardeep Singh Puri.

Energy trade between the two nations is crucial for supporting national priorities. During the India-US Strategic Clean Energy Partnership (SCEP) meeting, both sides reviewed progress in key areas such as power efficiency, responsible oil and gas, renewable energy, and emerging technologies.

The ministers highlighted the success in accelerating clean energy technologies and integrating renewable energy into reliable grids. They praised the launch of the Renewable Energy Technology Action Platform (RETAP) in August, which focuses on hydrogen, long-duration energy storage, offshore wind, and geothermal energy.

Additionally, they welcomed the establishment of the National Centre for Hydrogen Safety in India and the second International Conference on Green Hydrogen held this month.

Both nations stressed the importance of integrating large-scale renewable energy and enhancing grid flexibility with energy storage. They also discussed modernizing power distribution to ensure reliable 24/7 electricity, supporting India’s smart metering initiatives, and expanding efforts in power market reforms and cybersecurity.

The ministers commended Indian Railways for aiming for net-zero emissions by 2030 and supported the deployment of over 1.5 GW of round-the-clock renewable energy. They also endorsed collaboration on electrifying medium and heavy-duty vehicles, including the deployment of 10,000 e-buses under the PM eBus Sewa scheme.

Overall, the partnership underscores their shared commitment to clean energy and addressing climate challenges.
