India And Maldives To Start Fresh As Muizzu Is To Attend Swearing-In-Ceremony

Maldives President Mohamed Muizzu happily accepted an invitation to attend Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s swearing-in ceremony, calling it a “historic event.” India’s High Commissioner to Maldives presented the invitation during a visit to the President’s Office.

Muizzu expressed gratitude to PM Modi and eagerly anticipated working together to strengthen the close relations between Maldives and India.

The visit signals a positive turn in India-Maldives ties, which had strained since Muizzu took office. India sees Maldives as a crucial neighbor in the Indian Ocean Region.

External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar emphasized that the relationship is built on mutual interests and sensitivity.

During a recent visit by Maldives Foreign Minister Moosa Zameer to New Delhi, India stressed the importance of reaching an understanding to move the relationship forward.

India has been a significant provider of development assistance to the Maldives, enhancing infrastructure, healthcare, and security.

Despite recent tensions, India continues to export essential goods to Maldives and has allowed the export of construction materials.

India also acknowledged the cultural and historical ties between the two nations, as highlighted by PM Modi during Eid Al Fitr greetings to President Muizzu.

Muizzu’s acceptance of the invitation to Modi’s swearing-in ceremony is seen as a step towards strengthening bilateral relations.
