In a landmark achievement, an Indian Air Force (IAF) aircraft successfully landed on the South runway of Navi Mumbai International Airport. The inaugural landing of the IAF C-295, a large multi-role tactical airlifter, signifies a crucial milestone in the Adani Group’s development of the greenfield international airport, which began in August 2021 and is set to open in early 2025.
“We are proud of the progress NMIAL has made,” stated Mr. Jeet Adani, Director of Adani Airport Holdings Ltd. “As AAHL’s first greenfield airport, NMIAL represents years of planning and hard work. We thank the Government of Maharashtra and all stakeholders for making this project possible. This world-class airport will play a pivotal role in the region’s growth.”
The historic event attracted prominent dignitaries, including Maharashtra Chief Minister Mr. Eknath Shinde and Deputy Chief Ministers Mr. Devendra Fadnavis and Mr. Murlidhar Mohol. The successful touchdown of the IAF C-295 not only serves as a symbolic gesture but also marks a critical milestone in transitioning the airport from construction to full-scale operations.
This landing tests the newly built runway, taxiways, and air traffic control systems. It ensures that the airport meets all safety and regulatory requirements. Additionally, it highlights NMIAL’s capacity for joint civilian and military operations, including disaster response.
Strategically located, NMIAL is set to become one of India’s major aviation hubs. The airport will feature a 3,700-meter runway, modern passenger terminals, and advanced air traffic control systems. In its initial phase, it will handle up to 20 million passengers per annum (MPPA) and eventually accommodate 90 MPPA and 800,000 tons of cargo. The completion of NMIAL will significantly boost the local economy, enhancing accessibility and creating new commercial opportunities.
