Honoring Visionaries: Bharat Ratna Awarded to Narasimha Rao, Chaudhary Charan Singh, and MS Swaminathan

In a significant announcement, the Government of India has conferred the prestigious Bharat Ratna award upon three eminent personalities who have made indelible contributions to the nation across various domains.

Former Prime Ministers P.V. Narasimha Rao and Chaudhary Charan Singh, alongside renowned agricultural scientist Dr. M.S. Swaminathan, have been recognized for their exemplary service and transformative impact on Indian society.

The government earlier awarded socialist icon and former Bihar Chief Minister Karpoori Thakur, as well as veteran BJP politician LK Advani with the highest civilian award, Bharat Ratna.

Making the announcement, Prime Minister Narendra Modi tweeted, “It is the good fortune of our government that former Prime Minister of the country Chaudhary Charan Singh is being honoured with Bharat Ratna. This honor is dedicated to his incomparable contribution to the country. He had dedicated his entire life to the rights and welfare of farmers. Be it the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh or the Home Minister of the country and even as an MLA, he always gave impetus to nation-building. He also stood firm against the Emergency. His dedication to our farmer brothers and sisters and his commitment to democracy during the Emergency is inspiring to the entire nation.”

By honoring Chaudhary Charan Singh with the Bharat Ratna, the government pays tribute to his legacy of agrarian leadership and reaffirms its commitment to the welfare of the farming community, which forms the backbone of the Indian economy.

In his post Prime minister said, “Delighted to share that our former Prime Minister, Shri PV Narasimha Rao Garu, will be honoured with the Bharat Ratna.”

In honoring P.V. Narasimha Rao, Chaudhary Charan Singh, and Dr. M.S. Swaminathan with the Bharat Ratna, the Government of India celebrates the diversity of their contributions and pays homage to their enduring legacies. These visionary leaders exemplify the spirit of service, innovation, and resilience that continues to inspire generations of Indians, guiding the nation towards a future of prosperity, inclusivity, and sustainable development.

He was someone I knew closely and l always valued his insights and inputs.”

By conferring the Bharat Ratna upon Dr. M.S. Swaminathan, the government acknowledges his unparalleled contributions to Indian agriculture and underscores the critical role of science and technology in addressing the challenges of food security and rural development.
