Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Sunday alleged that the Indian National Congress diverted nearly Rs 150 crore every year from Assam’s healthcare budget during its 15-year rule in the state.
He made the remarks while speaking at a programme in Guwahati, where he inaugurated and laid foundation stones for healthcare projects worth Rs 2,092 crore.
HM Shah said that the condition of the healthcare system in Assam about a decade ago was extremely poor due to what he described as corruption and administrative failures during the Congress government.
According to HM Shah, “About 10 years ago, the healthcare system in Assam was in shambles. The Congress government was more concerned about the financial well-being of its leaders’ families rather than improving healthcare services for the people.”
HM Shah remarked that around ten years ago, the healthcare system in Assam was struggling because the previous government focused more on the financial interests of its leaders rather than on improving healthcare services for citizens.
The Home Minister said the BJP-led governments at the Centre and in the state remain committed to providing affordable and accessible healthcare to people from all sections of society.
He also praised Himanta Biswa Sarma, stating that the state’s healthcare infrastructure has seen major improvements under his leadership.
HM Shah added that medical facilities in Assam are gradually reaching the standards of more developed states such as Gujarat, Maharashtra and Karnataka.
He said the projects launched on Sunday will further improve healthcare services and increase access to quality medical treatment, especially for residents of rural and remote areas.
HM Shah also noted that the Centre and the Assam government are jointly expanding medical infrastructure by establishing new facilities and upgrading existing hospitals.
He added that these initiatives aim to ensure that people in Assam can access advanced treatment within the state itself.
The Union Home Minister concluded by saying that the government will continue to focus on building a strong healthcare system that guarantees both affordability and accessibility for every citizen.
