HM Amit Shah Accuses Congress Of Diluting Vande Mataram’s Legacy

Union Home Minister Amit Shah launched a sharp, direct attack on the Congress during the Rajya Sabha discussion commemorating 150 years of Vande Mataram. He criticised the Opposition for questioning the need for the debate and accused them of repeatedly avoiding national conversations whenever history or cultural heritage comes under review.

Shah reminded the House that several Congress MPs dismissed the discussion as a political diversion. He rejected the allegation and said the government has never shied away from any debate.

The Minister argued that those who frequently boycott parliamentary proceedings cannot question the government’s willingness to engage.

The Home Minister stated that the discussion matters because the nation is marking a historic milestone, the 150th anniversary of the composition of Vande Mataram.

HM Shah drew attention to past incidents where, according to him, Congress leaders restricted the song’s reach. He recalled that in 1937, when Vande Mataram completed 50 years, Jawaharlal Nehru ‘limited’ the national song to two stanzas.

Amit Shah said this act marked the beginning of appeasement politics, which later contributed to the country’s partition. He argued that if Congress had not tampered with the song for political gains, India might have avoided being divided in 1947.

Home Minister Amit Shah continued his criticism by recalling events from 1975. He said that when the national song completed 100 years, the Emergency prevented citizens from chanting Vande Mataram.

The Minister accused former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi of imprisoning those who raised the slogan, suppressing its patriotic force.

Shah Revives Historic Controversy

HM Shah also pointed out that during Monday’s Lok Sabha discussion, both Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra were absent. He claimed that from Nehru to the present leadership, the Congress has consistently opposed Vande Mataram in subtle or direct ways.

Home Minister Amit Shah attacked the Opposition further for linking the discussion to the upcoming West Bengal Assembly elections.

Shah said Vande Mataram never belonged to one region and should not be reduced to an electoral narrative. He acknowledged that Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay wrote the song in Bengal and that Anand Math originated there, but insisted that the song quickly moved beyond regional boundaries.

Freedom fighters around the world sang it whenever they gathered, making it a universal anthem of India’s struggle.

Shah stressed that even today, soldiers and police personnel often utter Vande Mataram in their final moments of sacrifice. He said this alone proves that the song holds deep emotional and patriotic value across the country.

He concluded by asserting that the need to honour Vande Mataram remains as strong today as it was during the freedom movement.

Home Minister Amit Shah said its spirit will continue to guide India’s journey toward becoming a great nation by 2047.
