Deeply saddened by the passing of Thiru Vummidi Ethiraj Ji. Hailing from a distinguished family based in Tamil Nadu, he will always be remembered for his efforts in crafting the historic Sengol that was presented to Former Prime Minister Nehru. Many years later, in 2023, it was our Government which had the honour of giving the Sengol a place of pride in the new Parliament building. During that time, I had the honour of meeting Thiru Vummidi Ethiraj Ji and expressing gratitude for what he has done for our nation and culture. His life and craftsmanship represent a remarkable connection between India’s glorious traditions and our national journey. My heartfelt condolences to his family and admirers. Om Shanti.

The Sengol, crafted by the Chennai-based Vummidi Bangaru Chetty family, was presented to Nehru in 1947 and is associated with India’s transfer of power.
On May 28, 2023, the historic sceptre found its place near the Lok Sabha Speaker’s chair in the new Parliament building.
The installation brought renewed attention to the Sengol’s historical significance and the traditional craftsmanship behind it, introducing the artefact to a wider audience, including younger generations.
Born on November 25, 1926, Vummidi Ethiraj dedicated his life to a craft that became part of an important chapter in India’s national history. His contribution, however, highlighted the role of skilled artisans in preserving the country’s cultural heritage and passing traditional knowledge across generations.
Ethiraj’s passing marks the loss of a craftsman whose work remains linked to a significant moment in India’s journey as an independent nation.
