Security forces killed two Maoists, including a high-ranking commander, during an encounter in Chhattisgarh’s Sukma district on Wednesday. The operation took place in the Pusgunna forest under the Kukanar Police Station limits.
Among the dead was Baman, the Local Organisation Squad Commander of Pedaras, who had a ₹5 lakh bounty. The second was a female Maoist. Authorities have not yet confirmed her identity.
The forces recovered their bodies along with weapons, including an INSAS rifle, a 12-bore rifle, ammunition, and explosives.
The anti-Naxal operation was led by a joint team from Kukanar Police and the Sukma District Reserve Guard. They launched the search early Wednesday after receiving specific intelligence about the Maoist movement.
Around 2 PM, the search team engaged in heavy crossfire with Maoist insurgents. The exchange lasted several hours.
After the encounter, reinforcements joined the operation to search the forest further. The rugged terrain made tracking the fleeing Maoists difficult.
Just days earlier, a pressure IED explosion killed Additional Superintendent of Police Akash Rao Giripunje near Dondra village. The blast, suspected as part of a Maoist retaliation, heightened tensions in the area.
In response, the security forces increased combing operations. Superintendent of Police Kiran Chavan confirmed that action will continue until Maoist camps are dismantled.
The recent Maoist encounter in Sukma highlights the ongoing challenges in restoring peace in Bastar.
