Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) chief Hemant Soren, currently out on bail in a money laundering case linked to an alleged land scam, is likely to reclaim the Chief Minister’s position in Jharkhand in a significant political development.
Reports indicate that the incumbent Chief Minister, Champai Soren, is likely to resign, making way for Hemant Soren’s return to the helm.
This decision emerged during a meeting held at Hemant Soren’s residence, attended by legislators and leaders of the JMM-led coalition.
During the gathering, Champai Soren offered to step down and proposed Hemant Soren’s name for the chief ministerial position, a move that received unanimous approval from the legislators.
The meeting, which has been underway since noon, includes key figures such as Congress Jharkhand in-charge Ghulam Ahmad Mir, Jharkhand Congress president Rajesh Thakur, and prominent leaders from all three parties of the JMM-led alliance.
The political landscape in Jharkhand shifted dramatically on 28 June when Hemant Soren secured bail from the Jharkhand High Court in the money laundering case.
His release has revitalized the JMM’s strategy and set the stage for his political comeback.
The coalition also resolved during the meeting that Hemant Soren would lead the alliance into the upcoming Assembly polls, solidifying his position as the central figure in Jharkhand’s political future.
Hemant Soren’s legal troubles began with his arrest by the Enforcement Directorate on 31 January, following allegations of involvement in a land scam.
In the wake of his arrest, he named Champai Soren as his successor.
However, with his recent legal reprieve, the dynamics within the JMM have shifted, paving the way for his return to power.
In a symbolic gesture, when Hemant Soren went to the Raj Bhavan to tender his resignation, he was accompanied by Champai Soren, who simultaneously staked his claim to form the government, underscoring the unity within the JMM leadership.
