In a decisive victory, the Hemant Soren-led coalition government in Jharkhand secured 45 votes out of 76 in the one-day special session of the Assembly on Monday, well above the majority mark of 39 votes.
BJP and AJSU MLAs dramatically boycotted and walked out of the session, voicing their discontent by raising slogans against the government.
Chief Minister Hemant Soren tabled the confidence motion at 11:10 AM, initiating a debate that culminated in a vote at 12:20 PM.
During the debate, Soren took aim at the opposition, suggesting their conduct in the House was indicative of their frustration and desperation.
He confidently predicted that many opposition MLAs would not retain their seats in the next elections.
Leader of the Opposition, Amar Kumar Bauri, did not hold back in his critique, branding the Soren government as a “Thug-bandhan alliance” and accusing it of betraying the people of Jharkhand, especially the youth, farmers, students, tribals, and Dalits.
Bauri highlighted what he perceived as the government’s failures, including the unmet promise of providing five lakh jobs to the youth.
This victory marks the fourth time Hemant Soren has successfully navigated a trust vote in the Jharkhand Assembly, following previous wins in 2013, 2019, and 2022.
However, Soren’s political journey has been tumultuous.
He was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate on 31 January this year in connection with a money laundering case related to a land scam, leading to his resignation as Chief Minister.
His successor, Champai Soren, resigned on 3 July following Hemant Soren’s release from jail on 28 June.
Meanwhile, Hemant Soren took oath as CM again on 4 July.
