Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri on Thursday described the 1984 anti-Sikh riots as one of the darkest stains on independent India’s history.
Reflecting on the tragic events, he said he still shudders when recalling those days when “helpless and innocent Sikh men, women and children were mindlessly massacred.”
Puri stated that the violence unfolded under the guidance of Congress leaders and their associates, all in the name of taking ‘revenge’ for the assassination of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. He lamented that the brutality left deep scars on India’s social fabric.
The minister condemned the police for failing to maintain peace and merely watching as mobs pulled Sikhs from their homes, vehicles, and Gurdwaras before burning them alive. He said the state machinery completely collapsed, with the protectors themselves becoming the perpetrators.
He also alleged that authorities used voter lists to identify Sikh homes and businesses, which allowed the violence to continue unchecked for several days.
Condemning the Congress’s role, Puri referred to the statement made by then Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi, “When a big tree falls, the earth shakes”, as open support for the killings. He alleged that this remark emboldened mobs to continue their rampage without fear of consequence.
He further accused several Congress leaders of personally leading mobs outside Gurdwaras while police officers watched passively. “The very institutions meant to uphold law and order surrendered their conscience and allowed a free hand to these leaders,” Puri said.
Hardeep Singh Puri’s remarks served as both a remembrance and a call for accountability. He emphasised that the 1984 riots remain a painful reminder of what happens when political power overrides humanity and justice.
The minister urged the nation to remember the victims and ensure such atrocities never recur, reinforcing the importance of unity, justice, and compassion in India’s democracy.
