In a chilling incident, a 17-year-old Class 11 student was brutally murdered by his grandfather in Prayagraj.
The crime took place on Tuesday and was driven by superstition. The accused then chopped off the victim’s limbs, wrapped the body in polythene, and dumped it in a drain in the Trans Yamuna industrial area.
The victim was identified as Piyush alias Yash, a resident of Sadiyapur in Kareli. He studied at Saraswati Vidya Mandir, Shahganj.
Police later arrested his grandfather, 58-year-old Saran Singh, and recovered the severed body parts at his instance.
The gruesome murder came to light around 4 PM when locals spotted a scooter rider throwing a polythene-wrapped body into the drain. The rider then sped away.
Police scanned CCTV footage of more than 50 cameras on Mirzapur Road and confirmed that the scooter had come from the city side.
Treating the case as a challenge, a joint team of Kareli police, SOG, and the surveillance cell tracked down and arrested Singh.
Police also seized a pistol, an iron saw, and Rs 500 cash used in the crime. He was sent to jail after interrogation.
According to DCP (City) Prayagraj Abhishek Bharti, Piyush had left home for school on the morning of August 26 but never returned. His family informed the police by evening, which led to the formation of a special investigation team.
During interrogation, Singh admitted to killing his grandson due to superstition. He accused his daughter-in-law, the victim’s mother, of practising witchcraft against the family.
He also had a domestic dispute with his son and daughter-in-law.
The accused lured Piyush on a pretext, held him hostage, and killed him in cold blood. He then dismembered the body to dispose of it at different places.
Police recovered all the remains and sent them for a post-mortem.
Officials said the murder was the result of superstition and a family feud. They confirmed that strict legal action is being taken against the accused.
