Government Sets Price Caps On Emergency And Essential Medicines

The Union government has imposed maximum price limits on four emergency-use medicines and 37 other essential drug formulations, including antibiotics and pain relief medicines.

The National Pharmaceutical Pricing Authority (NPPA) established these ceiling prices, covering treatments for infections, cardiovascular conditions, inflammation, diabetes, and vitamin deficiencies.

The NPPA stated, “Manufacturers selling branded or generic or both versions of the medicines at a price higher than the ceiling price (plus GST) shall revise the prices downward not exceeding the ceiling price.”

However, if a manufacturer’s current Maximum Retail Price (MRP) is below the ceiling price, they may continue selling at the existing price.

Among the emergency medicines, the price ceiling for Ipratropium, used to ease breathing difficulties in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease patients, is likely at Rs 2.96 per ml.

Sodium Nitroprusside, an injectable used to quickly reduce blood pressure during hypertensive emergencies, surgery, and acute heart failure, capped at Rs 28.99 per ml.

Diltiazem, prescribed for high blood pressure and chest pain, is limited to Rs 26.72 per capsule, while Povidone Iodine, used for skin disinfection and wound care, is fixed at Rs 6.26 per gram.

Price Cuts on Common Drugs and Combinations

Price reductions also apply to widely used drugs such as paracetamol, atorvastatin, amoxicillin, and metformin.

The pricing changes include combination drugs like Aceclofenac, Paracetamol, and Trypsin Chymotrypsin for anti-inflammatory and cardiovascular purposes, as well as a combination of Atorvastatin 40 mg and Clopidogrel 75 mg.

The NPPA clarified that these prices exclude GST, which may charge additionally.

Officials have instructed retailers and distributors to prominently display the revised prices.

Failure to comply will invite penalties under the Drug Price Control Order (DPCO) and the Essential Commodities Act, 1955, along with recovery of overcharged amounts plus interest.
