Three union ministers, including junior Agriculture Minister Arjun Munda, junior Home Minister Nityanand Rai, and Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal, along with a central government delegation, have been swiftly dispatched to Chandigarh to engage with representatives of protesting Punjab farmers. The meeting, scheduled for 6 pm, aims to defuse tensions and potentially halt a tractor march planned by the Punjab farmers for Tuesday. The farmers seek assurances on issues such as MSP (minimum support price) for crops, farmer pensions, crop insurance, and the withdrawal of police cases filed against them during the 2020 protests.
Simultaneously, an unrelated protest is unfolding at the Delhi-Noida border, where Uttar Pradesh farmers are demanding increased compensation and developed plots in exchange for their farmlands acquired by local development authorities for infrastructure projects. The Narendra Modi government’s swift response to the Punjab protest underscores its determination to address agitations promptly and prevent a recurrence of the violent nationwide demonstrations witnessed in 2020 against the contentious farm laws.
As the ruling BJP eyes a third consecutive term in the upcoming Lok Sabha election, it aims to avoid a reoccurrence of the unsettling scenes from three years ago, characterized by military-style barricades and makeshift townships around the Delhi border. While the Punjab protest receives immediate attention, the grievances of Uttar Pradesh farmers remain unaddressed.
