Government Launches AI-Powered Tools To Boost Rural Governance And Linguistic Inclusivity

The Indian government, aligned with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision, has launched AI-powered tools to promote rural governance. These tools, including Bhashini—an app for accessing information in local languages—are transforming how rural India engages with technology. The panchayati raj ministry has integrated AI into its eGramSwaraj portal, making it available in 22 Indian languages.

Breaking Linguistic Barriers in Panchayat Operations

The eGramSwaraj portal now supports regional languages, including those spoken by tribal communities like Bodo and Santhali. The platform also covers languages such as Nepali, Maithili, Dogri, Sanskrit, and Urdu. This multilingual approach improves panchayat planning, budgeting, and monitoring, allowing local communities to participate more inclusively in governance. It also ensures better service delivery by addressing local needs in regional languages.

Promoting Inclusivity with AI-Powered Conferences

In addition to the eGramSwaraj portal, the panchayati raj ministry uses Bhashini’s Vaanianuvad tool for voice-to-voice translation during conferences. This technology enables seamless communication in native languages, ensuring accessibility and inclusivity. It counters the narrative of Hindi supremacy, reinforcing the government’s commitment to empowering all communities.

At the national workshop on the people’s plan campaign 2024, AI-powered tools enabled live broadcasts in eight regional languages, including Bengali, Tamil, Gujarati, and Telugu. The initiative was expanded at the Panchayat Sammelan in Hyderabad, with live-streaming in 11 languages. The government plans to continue this effort to enhance communication in rural governance.
