Government Aims To Expand Allied Health Workforce & Boost Global Ayush Outreach

The Union government has outlined a comprehensive plan to expand the allied health workforce. It also aims to strengthen healthcare infrastructure and promote AYUSH systems globally through the latest Budget.

The allocation for the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has increased by 10 per cent for 2025-26, exceeding Rs 1,06,530 crore.

This marks a 194 per cent rise over the past 12 years. The Department of Health Research has received Rs 4,821.21 crore.

This highlights a strong focus on medical innovation and universal healthcare.

The Budget also provides 100 per cent customs duty exemption on 17 new cancer medicines.

The plan aims to train one lakh allied health professionals and 1.5 lakh caregivers in five years. This will strengthen healthcare support systems nationwide.

The government plans to establish three new All India Institutes of Ayurveda to meet growing global demand.

It will also upgrade the WHO Global Traditional Medicine Centre in Jamnagar. These initiatives aim to improve education, clinical training, and research in the AYUSH sector.

Authorities plan to strengthen regulatory frameworks and certification systems. They aim to position Indian AYUSH products in global markets that demand scientifically validated solutions.

Funding for the Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana continues to rise.

The scheme offers coverage of up to Rs 5 lakh per family annually and benefits more than 12 crore vulnerable households.

The government acknowledged progress in maternal and child health and rising life expectancy, which has increased from 49.7 years in 1973 to 70.3 years in 2023.

However, it warned that non-communicable diseases such as cardiovascular conditions, diabetes, obesity, and cancer now account for 57 per cent of deaths.

To address this, the National Programme for Prevention and Control of Non-Communicable Diseases identifies high-risk individuals and ensures timely treatment.
