Goa Police detains Harish Hemnani for seven days in a sextortion case

A top police officer announced on Tuesday that Harish Hemnani, the main suspect in several sextortion cases under investigation by the Goa Police, had been taken into jail and placed under police remand for a period of seven days.

According to the police, Hemnani led a gang of women who would accuse their victims, usually businessmen, if they did pay up. Harish Hemnani was on the run for more than two months and was picked up by the Goa Police on Saturday. He has been remanded in police custody for seven days.

“Harish established his base in Goa and oversaw the network of extortion, enlisting the help of women to entice men.” He belonged to a bigger network, and we are searching for further suspects in the case, according to Nidhin Valsan, superintendent of police for crime.

The fourth individual in this case to be arrested is Harish Hemnani. Three persons, two of whom were women, were taken into custody by the Goa police in late August on suspicion of extorting money from businesses by threatening to bring rape cases against them.

Kiran Patel, a citizen of Gujarat, submitted an extortion complaint alleging that the suspects threatened to implicate him in a rape case if he didn’t pay up, which prompted the Goa Police to begin investigating these incidents.
