Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Saturday extended greetings on National Girl Child Day, underlining the vital role girls play in India’s development. He emphasised that girls are not just a responsibility but a source of strength, with women now leading the nation’s progress.
Taking to X, Shah posted, “Greetings to everyone on ‘National Girl Child Day.’ #NationalGirlChildDay symbolizes that girls are not merely our responsibilities but sheer strength. The glorious examples of Rani Lakshmi Bai, Rani Velu Nachiyar, Mula Gabharu, and Pritilata Waddedar fill every Indian heart with pride and inspiration.”
He added that the government’s focus on women-led development has placed Nari Shakti at the forefront of India’s growth story. He also highlighted the transformative impact of empowering girls and women.
The Ministry of Women and Child Development initiated National Girl Child Day in 2008, and it has been observed annually on 24 January. The day aims to raise awareness about the rights, education, and welfare of girls. It also promotes equal opportunities and combats gender-based discrimination.
The observance draws attention to societal issues such as female foeticide, declining sex ratio, child marriage, and gender inequality. It also aims to foster a more inclusive environment for girls.
Several schemes have been launched to support girls’ education, health, and socio-economic growth. Key programmes include Beti Bachao Beti Padhao, Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana, and the National Scheme of Incentives to Girls for Secondary Education.
Legal measures like the Prohibition of Child Marriage Act, 2006, the POCSO Act, 2012, and the Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act, 2015, reinforce protection and care for girls.
Additional initiatives such as Mission Vatsalya, the Track Child Portal, and PM CARES for Children address child welfare. They also support orphaned children and those in need of mental health or medical care.
National Girl Child Day serves as a reminder of the importance of empowering girls, promoting education, and ensuring equality and safety. Recognising and nurturing the potential of every girl child is key to creating a more inclusive and progressive India.
