During his first foreign visit since being re-elected as Prime Minister of India for the third consecutive term, Narendra Modi traveled to Italy, where he met with several global leaders at the G7 summit, which includes the world’s seven largest economies: the USA, Germany, UK, France, Italy, Canada, and Japan. During the summit, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni warmly greeted Modi with a traditional Indian gesture, folding her hands in a respectful ‘namaste’.

Prior to meeting Giorgia Meloni, Prime Minister Modi also had discussions with French President Emmanuel Macron and British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak. In his conversation with President Macron, Modi described their meeting as an opportunity to strengthen India-France relations, highlighting their focus on defense, security, technology, artificial intelligence, and the blue economy. Modi also wished Macron well for hosting the Paris Olympics next month, emphasizing the importance of innovation and research among youth in both countries.
Regarding his meeting with Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, Modi expressed pleasure at their discussions, which covered enhancing the India-UK comprehensive strategic partnership. Modi noted the potential for growth in areas such as semiconductors, technology, and trade, as well as expanding defense collaborations.
Amid ongoing discussions around the Russia-Ukraine conflict, Modi also held a bilateral meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, during which Zelensky warmly embraced Modi, reflecting the significant diplomatic engagement between the two leaders.
