G20 Manifesto: S. Jaishankar Asserts Rejection Of Nuclear Weapons Use Or Threat

G20 Summit 2023: During the second session of the ongoing G20 Summit in Delhi, Prime Minister Modi made a significant announcement. While addressing the heads of state from guest nations, he stated that there is consensus on the New Delhi G20 Declaration. He said, “I’m pleased to announce that with the hard work of our team and your support, consensus has been achieved on the G20 Leaders’ Summit Declaration. I propose that we also adopt the Declaration. I also pledge to adopt this Declaration.”

Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, and G20 Sherpa Amitabh Kant addressed the press conference regarding the G20 Summit. During this, Foreign Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar stated that G20 leaders condemned all forms and expressions of terrorism and recognized it as one of the most serious threats to international peace and security.

Consensus on the Declaration

He mentioned that G20 leaders have agreed on a Declaration that is focused on robust, sustainable, balanced, and inclusive development. It will accelerate progress towards SDGs (Sustainable Development Goals). S. Jaishankar stated that this was an opportunity to showcase our culture, tradition, and heritage. G20 has prepared India for the world and the world for India.

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman stated that digital public infrastructure has been integrated into the G20 Financial Inclusion Action Plan, which will run between 2024 and 2026. She mentioned that a working group of G20 Finance Ministers has been established to strengthen Multilateral Development Banks (MDBs), and it has submitted its Part-1 report. The report recommends a triple agenda that aligns with the call for stronger, bigger, and more effective MDBs. The third point of strengthening MDBs involves working collectively towards increasing the financial capacity of the World Bank.

G20 New Delhi Declaration on Ukraine Issue

The New Delhi Declaration states, “Recalling discussions in Bali on the situation in Ukraine, we reiterated our national positions on the proposals (A/RES/ES-11/1 and A/RES/ES-11/6) in the United Nations Security Council and the United Nations General Assembly and underscored the importance of all countries acting in accordance with the purposes and principles of the United Nations Charter.”

It further states that in line with the United Nations Charter, all states should refrain from regional acquisition or exercise of domination or threat or use of force against territorial integrity or political independence. It also declares the use or threat of use of nuclear weapons as unacceptable.
