From Frigate Launch To Fighting Addiction: President Murmu’s Dual Mission in Kolkata

President Droupadi Murmu is set to embark on a significant visit to West Bengal today, August 17, with a comprehensive itinerary that includes launching an advanced stealth frigate and inaugurating a campaign against addiction. The Rashtrapati Bhavan announced these endeavors on Wednesday, August 16.

Her activities are poised to encompass a diverse range of events during her one-day sojourn in Kolkata.

Notably, President Murmu will preside over the launch of the Vindhyagiri, which holds the distinction of being the sixth ship within the framework of project 17A of the Indian Navy.

This noteworthy ceremony will take place at the Garden Reach Shipbuilders Engineers Limited.

Setting Sail: Unveiling Vindhyagiri and Project 17A

The spotlight of President Murmu’s visit will shine upon the launch of Vindhyagiri, a name harkening to the eponymous mountain range in Karnataka.

Functioning as the sixth ship of the Project 17A Frigates, Vindhyagiri represents an advancement within the realm of naval engineering.

The Project 17A ships, evolving from the Project 17 Class Frigates (Shivalik Class), stand distinguished by their enhanced stealth attributes, cutting-edge weaponry and sensors, and platform management systems.

Vindhyagiri, both a technological marvel and an embodiment of naval legacy, pays tribute to its predecessor, the erstwhile INS Vindhyagiri.

The Ministry of Defence aptly encapsulated this transition, stating, “The old Vindhyagiri in its nearly 31 years of service from July 8, 81 to June 11, 2012, had witnessed various challenging operations and multinational exercises. The newly christened Vindhyagiri stands as a symbol of India’s determination to embrace its rich naval heritage while propelling itself towards a future of indigenous defence capabilities.”

Under the comprehens1ive Project 17A program, progress is underway with a total of four ships under construction by M/s MDL and three by M/s GRSE.

This initiative represents a strategic leap toward self-reliance in naval capabilities.

Pioneering the Path to an Addiction-Free Bengal

In a parallel endeavor of profound societal importance, President Murmu will also inaugurate the ‘My Bengal, Addiction Free Bengal’ Campaign.

This campaign is orchestrated under the ‘Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyan’ and is hosted by the Brahma Kumaris at Raj Bhavan, Kolkata.

This initiative echoes the nationwide commitment to combatting addiction and fostering holistic well-being.

President Murmu’s engagement in West Bengal reflects the nation’s emphasis on strengthening both its maritime prowess and its social fabric.

The President’s visit stands as a testament to India’s aspirations for progress, resilience, and unity.

President Murmu’s prior visit to West Bengal in March, marked by a Guard of Honour at the Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport, resonated with the spirit of collaboration and shared purpose.

This forthcoming visit continues to underscore the nation’s collective commitment to growth and development.
