Muchkund Dubey
Former Foreign Secretary Muchkund Dubey, a distinguished diplomat and scholar, passed away in Delhi at the age of 90 after battling various age-related illnesses. Born in 1933 in undivided Bihar, Dubey embarked on a remarkable journey in diplomacy and academia. He joined the Indian Foreign Service in 1957, marking the beginning of a stellar career that spanned several pivotal roles.
Throughout his diplomatic tenure, Dubey made significant contributions as India’s High Commissioner to Bangladesh and Permanent Representative to the United Nations. His international influence extended to his service at the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Headquarters and as a member of UNESCO’s Executive Board.
Educationally accomplished, Dubey held a Master’s degree in economics from Patna University and pursued further studies in economics at Oxford and New York universities. His academic pursuits culminated in a D.Litt from the University of Calcutta. His scholarly interests encompassed diverse aspects of the global economy, international security, development cooperation, and South Asian dynamics.

Following his retirement from the Indian Foreign Service, Dubey enriched the academic community at Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) as a respected professor for nearly eight years. His teaching and research not only shaped minds but also contributed significantly to literature through numerous authored and edited works on international relations and development issues.
Dubey is survived by his wife Basanti Dubey and daughters Medha Dubey and Madhu Dubey. His final rites are scheduled at the Lodhi Road crematorium on June 27th at 4 p.m. His profound impact on diplomacy and academia leaves a lasting legacy, and he will be dearly remembered by all who knew him.
