FIR Filed Against Mithun Chakraborty For Provocative Statement At BJP Meeting

Kolkata Police have registered an FIR against actor and BJP leader Mithun Chakraborty following a complaint alleging that he made a provocative statement at a party meeting in Kolkata last month.

The statement, delivered during an organizational meeting attended by Union Home Minister Amit Shah, has raised concerns of inciting violence.

An anonymous individual lodged the complaint on Monday evening at Bowbazar Police Station in central Kolkata, with their identity kept confidential for security reasons.

The complainant accused Chakraborty of making remarks during the 27 October meeting that could potentially fuel tensions and provoke violence.

In his address at the meeting, Chakraborty stated, “I am saying this in front of the Union Minister that I will do whatever is necessary for West Bengal. There are hidden meanings when I say that I will do whatever is needed. One leader is claiming that in a particular district, there are 70 per cent Muslims against 30 per cent Hindus. He also said that the latter will be cut and thrown in Bhagirathi river. Surprisingly the Chief Minister did not tell him anything. A day will come when I will busy you in your own soil.”

Chakraborty’s comments appear to refer to a controversial statement made by Kabir earlier this year, which had attracted criticism for allegedly inflaming communal tensions.

Kabir claimed that in the minority-dominated Murshidabad, Muslims would outnumber Hindus in the future.

His remarks prompted the Election Commission of India to issue a show-cause notice to Kabir, condemning the comments as provocative.

While Chakraborty’s statement was likely an attempt to respond to Kabir’s controversial remarks, it has drawn the ire of critics who claim it could exacerbate communal divisions.

Complainant Urges Legal Action Against Chakraborty Over Provocative Statement

The complainant urged the police to take appropriate legal action against Chakraborty, asserting that the actor’s words could incite violence in the state, especially given the sensitive nature of communal issues in the region.

The Kolkata Police have filed an FIR against Chakraborty, though it remains unclear what further action they will take at this stage.

The actor, who received the prestigious Dadasaheb Phalke Award for his contributions to cinema, has yet to publicly respond to the FIR.

This incident has further fueled tensions within West Bengal’s political landscape, where the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) and the opposition BJP have been at odds over issues related to communal harmony, minority rights, and electoral strategies.

The city police are actively investigating the matter, and the case is likely to attract further attention as it unfolds.

Chakraborty, a former film star turned politician, has been a vocal figure in BJP’s campaigns, especially in West Bengal, where the party has sought to challenge TMC’s long-standing dominance.

The actor’s controversial comments are likely to further stoke political debate in a state already fraught with political rivalry and communal tensions.
