Farmers’ Welfare Remains Government’s Foremost Priority: PM Modi

On Wednesday, Prime Minister Modi stressed once again that nothing matters more to his government than ensuring the welfare of farmers, who drive India’s growth.

“The welfare of our farmers, who are playing a pivotal role in building a developed India, is among the top priorities of our government. In this direction, a decision has been taken to increase the MSP for rabi crops. This will not only strengthen our food security further but also benefit our farmer brothers and sisters,” the Prime Minister wrote in a post on X.

He was referring to the Cabinet’s approval on Wednesday to raise the MSP for rabi crops for the 2026-27 marketing year. It will ensure profitable returns for cultivators on their produce.

The revised MSPs show safflower at the top with an increase of ₹600 per quintal, while lentil follows at ₹300.

Rapeseed and mustard have been raised by ₹250 per quintal, gram by ₹225, barley by ₹170, and wheat by ₹160.

The Prime Minister further stressed, “We are leaving no effort spared to safeguard the interests of our farmer brothers and sisters nationwide. In this direction, our government has sanctioned the Mission on Self-Reliance in Pulses. This historic step will not only boost pulse production but also strengthen our determination toward self-sufficiency.”

MSP Hike, Pulses Mission

On Wednesday, the Union Cabinet, chaired by PM Modi, approved the Mission for Aatmanirbharta in Pulses with a financial allocation of ₹11,440 crore.

This landmark programme, aimed at expanding domestic output and achieving self-reliance in pulses, will run over six years from 2025-26 to 2030-31.

An official note said the mission will benefit nearly 2 crore farmers by providing quality seeds.

The government will improve post-harvest infrastructure and procure tur, urad, and masoor pulses at MSP over the next four years.

Pulses occupy a vital role in India’s agricultural systems and daily diets. India remains the largest global producer and consumer of pulses.

With improving incomes and living standards, pulse consumption has surged. However, domestic production has lagged, resulting in a 15–20 per cent dependence on imports.

In another post, PM Modi hailed a Cabinet decision to expand and upgrade the Kalibor-Numaligarh stretch of NH-715 in Assam.

“A historic decision for Assam & the Northeast! The Cabinet decision on widening and upgradation of the Kalibor–Numaligarh section of NH-715, including an elevated corridor with wildlife-friendly measures in the Kaziranga stretch, will boost development as well as ensure animal safety. Tourism to Kaziranga will receive a big boost,” he noted.

The Prime Minister also highlighted the Cabinet’s approval of Phase III of the Biomedical Research Career Programme, which, he said, will “nurture young scientific talent, fund fellowships and collaborative projects, and build world-class biomedical research capacity across India.”
