Explosion triggers fire at Gujarat chemical plant, 24 workers injured

Following an explosion on Wednesday that left 24 workers injured, a fire broke out at a chemical plant in Surat, Gujarat, according to officials.

Around two in the morning, flammable chemicals that were stored in a large tank burst, causing the chemical factory in the Sachin GIDC industrial area to catch fire, according to Chief Fire Officer Basant Pareek, who is in charge of Surat.

“At least 24 workers suffered injuries and were rushed to a hospital where they are undergoing treatment,” according to him.
The number of workers inside the factory at the time of the incident was not immediately known, he said.

“The blast caused a fire in the three-story building of the factory and engulfed the entire unit,” a different official stated.

He said that efforts were being made to contain the fire after more than a dozen fire engines were dispatched to the scene.
