An exchange of fire erupted between the Security Forces and Maoists at Bhaludiigi Hill under the jurisdiction of Mainpur Police Station in Gariaband district, Chhattisgarh.
Security forces await further details of the clash but have confirmed the neutralisation of key Maoist figures, including Modem Balakrishna and others.
The operation neutralised Modem Balakrishna—also known by aliases such as Venkateswarlu, Balanna, Ramchander, Babanna, Bhaskar, and Rajendra—and a CCM (Central Committee Member) who led the Western Bureau under the Odisha State Committee of the CPI (Maoist).
Following the operation, the security forces seized weapons.
Identity and Aliases: Modem Balakrishna has operated under various names, including Venkateswarlu and Balanna.
Educational Qualifications: He studied Intermediate at Malakpet Junior College, Hyderabad, from 1981 to 1983.
Originally from Madikonda, Warangal district, Balakrishna resided in Sultanpura, Chaderghat, Hyderabad.
He completed his SSC at Sulthanbazar Government High School in Hyderabad in English medium.
During his college years, he became influenced by the ideology of Sambamurthy and Santosh Reddy regarding the Radical Students Union (RSU) and joined the Bhadrachalam forest movement as a full-time activist in 1983.
Security forces arrested Balakrishna in 1984 at Bhadrachalam Bus Stand and imprisoned him at Warangal Central Jail until 1986.
After his release, he remained active in Hyderabad until police arrested him again in Mahaboobnagar in 1987, holding him until 1990, when they released him in a political exchange involving a kidnapped MLA.
By 1991, he held leadership roles, becoming the District Committee Secretary (DCS) for Mahaboobnagar and Regional Committee Member (RCM) for South Telangana.
Security forces arrested him again in 1993 in Kurnool. After his release on bail in 1999, he went underground.
He was then appointed Secretary of the Orissa State Organising Committee and took charge of guiding the Western Bureau under Odisha’s State Committee.
The elimination of a senior Maoist leader such as Modem Balakrishna, along with other cadre members, is a significant blow to the Maoist insurgency in the region, particularly impacting the Odisha State Committee’s operations.
The recovery of arms further weakens the group’s capabilities.
The Security Forces remain vigilant as operations against Maoist insurgents continue in the region.
The neutralisation of such experienced cadres aims to restore peace and stability, supporting government efforts to improve security and development in affected areas.
This encounter marks a crucial step in counter-insurgency efforts in Chhattisgarh and neighbouring states, reflecting the ongoing commitment of Indian security agencies to combat Maoist extremism and uphold law and order.
