Even With Binoculars, You Won’t Find Congress In 2026 Assam Polls, Says Amit Shah

Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Friday launched a strong attack on the Congress, declaring that the party has lost ground in Assam and will be wiped out in the 2026 Assembly elections.

Speaking at the Panchayat Representatives’ Conclave, Shah remarked, “The Centre and the Congress were thinking what would happen in the Panchayat elections in Assam, but when the time came, the reality became clear. In the upcoming elections, even if you search with binoculars, you won’t be able to spot Congress.”

The statement came before an audience of nearly 20,000 newly elected panchayat representatives, which he described as evidence of the BJP-led government’s deepening grassroots reach.

During his address, the Home Minister invoked the blessings of Maa Kamakhya and paid tribute to Assam’s historical and cultural icons, including freedom fighters Lachit Borphukan, Bir Chilarai, Kanaklata Barua, and Bharat Ratna Bhupen Hazarika.

He credited Prime Minister Narendra Modi with driving what he called ‘transformative change’ in Assam over the past 11 years, while also highlighting the BJP government’s work in promoting the state’s cultural identity at the national level.

Shah recalled how the Modi government gave national recognition to the Sattriya dance, honoured the legacy of Srimanta Sankardev, and marked the 400th birth anniversary of Ahom general Lachit Borphukan with celebrations in New Delhi in 2022.

“It was only because of Modi ji’s vision that the entire country came to know about the unparalleled contribution of Lachit Borphukan in India’s history,” Shah noted.

Framing the BJP’s governance as both development-oriented and culturally affirming, Shah argued that the party has cemented its leadership in Assam, leaving the Congress with little political relevance.
