Election Commission Of India Extends Deadline For Electoral Roll Claims In Tamil Nadu Till January 30

The Election Commission of India (ECI) has extended the deadline for submitting claims and objections related to the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Tamil Nadu till January 30, 2026.

The move aims to ensure wider voter inclusion and allow eligible citizens additional time to verify and correct their electoral details.

The initial deadline for filing claims and objections concluded on January 18, 2026.

After reviewing several factors affecting voter participation, the Commission, however, decided to grant an extension of nearly two weeks.

Tamil Nadu Chief Electoral Officer Archana Patnaik announced the decision on Monday.

In an official release, the Commission appealed to all eligible voters to make use of the extended window to submit claims for inclusion of names, seek corrections to existing entries, or raise objections against incorrect or duplicate entries in the electoral rolls.

Voters have been cautioned not to miss what has been described as the final opportunity to ensure accuracy in their electoral records ahead of upcoming elections.

The Commission noted that the extension would help those who could not complete the verification process within the original schedule due to procedural or logistical difficulties.

Background of the Special Intensive Revision

The Special Intensive Revision began in October 2025, with January 1, 2026, designated as the qualifying date for voter eligibility in Tamil Nadu.

Draft electoral rolls published on December 19, 2025, and the original claims and objections period ran from December 19, 2025, to January 18, 2026.

According to the release, the ECI exercised its powers under the proviso to Rule 12 of the Registration of Electors Rules, 1960, to extend the deadline.

Election officials reiterated that the SIR is a crucial exercise to enhance the accuracy and integrity of electoral rolls by removing ineligible entries, updating voter information, and including newly eligible voters.

Voters can file claims and objections through designated election offices and approved online platforms.

The extension will particularly benefit first-time voters, migrants, and individuals whose names remain omitted or contain errors, strengthening the credibility of the electoral process in the state.
