The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has summoned BJP leader and former Punjab Chief Minister Capt Amarinder Singh and his son Raninder Singh in connection with a 2016 Foreign Exchange Management Act (FEMA) violation case.
The father-son duo is accused of being beneficiaries of certain foreign assets, including a Swiss bank account.
Capt Amarinder Singh has been asked to appear before the ED at its Jalandhar office on Thursday. His son has also been directed to appear on the same day.
Capt Amarinder Singh is unlikely to attend as he recently underwent knee replacement surgery at a private hospital in Mohali.
Responding to the summons, Raninder Singh wrote on X, “As law-abiding citizens, we will cooperate fully with every investigation agency. We have absolute faith in the rule of law and are confident that truth and justice will prevail.”
The case dates back to 2016, when Amarinder Singh was with the Congress party. In October 2020, Raninder Singh was also summoned by the ED in Jalandhar to explain the alleged movement of funds to Switzerland and the creation of a trust in the British Virgin Islands.
The Income Tax Department had filed a charge sheet in 2016 before the Chief Judicial Magistrate in Ludhiana, alleging that Raninder Singh was the beneficiary of foreign assets controlled through overseas business entities. It also alleged that he held foreign bank accounts with HSBC Private Bank (SUISSE) SA, Geneva.
Authorities further claimed that he misled investigators regarding documents linked to family income and overseas trusts.
Records reportedly identified him as a ‘settler’ of Jacaranda Trust, established in July 2005 in the British Virgin Islands.
The duo challenged the Ludhiana court’s order in the Punjab and Haryana High Court, arguing that income tax records contained ‘secret’ information shared by the French Republic under a Double Taxation Avoidance Agreement.
In September 2025, the high court upheld the additional district judge’s order, calling it ‘well-reasoned’ and free from legal infirmity.
