EAM Jaishankar Meets US NSA Jake Sullivan In Delhi; Discusses Bilateral Ties

External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar met outgoing US National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan in New Delhi on Monday to discuss strategic, regional, and bilateral issues. Sullivan is on a two-day visit to India, marking one of the Biden administration’s final high-profile engagements before Donald Trump’s inauguration as the 47th US President on January 20.

Sullivan’s visit centers on reviewing the India-US Initiative on Critical and Emerging Technologies (iCET). This partnership framework aims to enhance collaboration in key areas like space, defence, and strategic technology. During his stay, Sullivan will also meet NSA Ajit Doval and engage with young Indian entrepreneurs at IIT Delhi, delivering a speech on innovation under iCET.

The discussions with Doval will emphasize the implementation of iCET initiatives, including advancements in Artificial Intelligence, semiconductors, and biotechnology. Both leaders have highlighted iCET’s transformative role in strengthening the India-US strategic partnership.

During a June 2024 roundtable, Doval stressed the need to lead in emerging technologies to safeguard shared values. Sullivan echoed this, outlining innovation, production, and deployment as the pillars of the technology partnership. He also emphasized the importance of government support for private sector initiatives.

The visit follows Jaishankar’s recent six-day trip to the US, where he reviewed the India-US strategic partnership’s progress with officials like Secretary of State Antony Blinken and Sullivan.

Setting the Stage for Future Ties

The iCET framework, launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Joe Biden in May 2022, has been pivotal in driving cooperation in critical sectors. As Sullivan concludes his visit, these discussions aim to ensure seamless collaboration under the Trump administration, further deepening strategic and technological ties.
