Dr Shailendra Kumar Launches ‘The Cob (Web) Turns Twenty’ At TIOL Congress; Unravelling Global Tax Narratives

Dr Shailendra Kumar, journalist and author, launched his new book, ‘The Cob (Web) Turns Twenty’ at the TIOL Congress, published by Oak Bridge.

The book features ten thought-provoking chapters that explore global tax events, provide valuable lessons, and offer ‘food for thought’ for tax experts and policymakers seeking to simplify taxpayers’ lives.

During the event, N Venkataraman, Additional Solicitor General and author of the book’s foreword, congratulated Dr Kumar, stating, “His purpose inspires readers to become regular followers of his work.”

MK Sinha, CEO of GST Network, noted that the book makes a traditionally complex subject engaging.

“Dr Kumar links taxation to everyday life with humour and clarity, presenting the evolution of India’s tax system in a compelling narrative,” he said.

Renu Nervekar, Managing Director, Tax – India & South Asia Markets, Standard Chartered Bank, added, “The book distils sixty articles into ten chapters, guiding readers through historical and contemporary tax challenges, including digital economy, transparency, and global cooperation. It reflects the author’s discipline, insight, and dedication to documenting taxation.”

Engaging Stories and Lessons

Renowned economist Shailesh Haribhakti praised the book for presenting 16 ‘Intaxicating’ stories that impart multiple lessons. Each of the ten chapters contains a ‘golden thread’ to maintain thematic continuity, with engaging titles such as ‘Binge-worthy Fiscal Tales’.

The book discusses issues including Robo Tax, Graduate Tax, digital economy taxation, black money, tax havens, GST, OECD policies for the Global South, multinational taxation, and long-standing tax disputes in India and the US.

Dr Shailendra Kumar is the founder, editor and CEO of India’s first online taxation, business, and economic news portal, www.taxindiaonline.com (TIOL).

He also serves as a trustee of the TIOL National Taxation Awards and chairman of the TIOL Knowledge Foundation, promoting global economic and fiscal thought leadership.

‘The Cob (Web) Turns Twenty’ offers readers an insightful, witty, and comprehensive exploration of taxation systems, combining historical perspective with practical lessons for today’s policymakers and taxpayers.
