Dr Dinesh Sharma Highlights Role Of Sanitation Workers At Lucknow Labour Day Event

Rajya Sabha MP and former Deputy Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh, Dr Dinesh Sharma, described the Valmiki/Dhanuk community as central to Lucknow’s functioning, stating that its contribution is as essential as life itself. He emphasised that the strength of labour defines the strength of the state, and that a truly developed city must ensure dignity and respect for its workers.

Dr Dinesh Sharma was speaking as the chief guest at a Labour Day employee felicitation programme held at Triloknath Hall, organised by the Lucknow Municipal Corporation Sanitation Workers Joint Forum. He likened sanitation workers to caregivers, highlighting their indispensable role in maintaining cleanliness and public health in the city.

Referring to the significance of Labour Day, the Rajya Sabha MP described workers as ‘labour warriors’ and pointed to growing recognition of their contribution. He noted that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has promoted cleanliness initiatives and publicly honoured sanitation workers during major events such as the Kumbh.

Drawing a contrast with the past, Dr Dinesh Sharma remarked that while rulers like Shah Jahan were known to penalise labourers, present-day governance focuses on their welfare and recognition. He highlighted digital portals created to spread awareness about welfare schemes, along with financial support measures for workers in the unorganised sector. These include a monthly pension of Rs 3,000 for unskilled workers above 60 years of age. Labour laws, he added, have also been simplified to improve access to benefits.

Highlighting the Valmiki community’s capabilities, Dr Dinesh Sharma said its members possess diverse skills and can excel across fields. He also recalled his early association with the Valmiki/Dhanuk families during childhood and later interactions with the community during his tenure as mayor.

Dr Dinesh Sharma further praised the current mayor of Lucknow for improving civic administration and strengthening municipal services.

On national issues, the Rajya Sabha MP stressed the importance of unity, stating that the country’s progress depends on collective strength rather than divisions along caste or religious lines. Development schemes, he added, are being implemented without discrimination.

Addressing law and order, Dr Dinesh Sharma said Uttar Pradesh has undergone a significant transformation, moving away from its earlier image of crime and unrest towards stricter enforcement and improved discipline. He also cautioned against attempts by external forces to create instability and urged citizens to remain vigilant.

Awards and Honours

During the programme, senior sanitation workers and their family members received the ‘Comrade Ratna’ award in recognition of their dedication and service, described as the backbone of the city.

Among those present were former Vice Chairman of the Uttar Pradesh Sanitation Workers Commission Munna Singh, retired IAS officer Diwakar Tripathi, Lucknow Bar Association President GN Shukla, Additional Municipal Commissioner Dr Rao, senior journalist Santosh Valmiki, along with other public representatives and community leaders.
