Doctors Can Bring ‘Profound Change In Society’, Says President Droupadi Murmu

President Droupadi Murmu on Monday said that capable and socially responsible doctors can bring about ‘profound change in society’. She addressed the first convocation of AIIMS Rajkot in Rajkot.

Speaking to students, the President said several AIIMS institutions have been established across India to provide advanced and affordable tertiary healthcare. She noted that these institutions play a key role in medical education, research, innovation and public health policy.

“The commitment of AIIMS to advancing healthcare through innovative research and patient care is praiseworthy,” President Murmu stated.

The President noted that AIIMS Rajkot, being a new institute, has significant potential ahead. She urged authorities to address regional health challenges alongside broader objectives.

President Murmu stressed the importance of transparency in governance.

“Good governance plays a pivotal role in the healthy growth of any organisation. Steps taken right at the outset to ensure good governance and transparency will have a far-reaching impact on the development of this institution,” she asserted.

Describing medicine as a service, President Murmu said the profession demands more than knowledge. She emphasised the need for empathy, patience and humility.

Referring to the white coat, the President said it symbolises public trust in doctors.

“The white coat that the doctors wear symbolises the trust the society places in them during moments of illness and uncertainty. The responsibility of upholding this trust rests upon the shoulders of doctors,” she noted.

Highlighting rapid advancements, President Murmu added, “Technological advancements are occurring at an unprecedented pace in the medical field. Artificial Intelligence, Robotics, precision medicine and digital health services are rapidly transforming the landscape and potential of the medical world.”

The President encouraged graduates to adopt new technologies while maintaining compassion.

“By adopting the latest technologies, they will not only be able to enhance their knowledge and skills but also treat diseases more effectively. Nothing can substitute the role of human empathy in medicine,” she further said.

President Murmu further remarked, “A doctor’s gentle words, a reassuring smile, and the patience to truly listen can often heal in ways that medicine alone cannot.”

The President said becoming a doctor is an achievement, but values define true success.

“Being a good doctor is a significant achievement. The true measure of a doctor lies in embodying values such as integrity, compassion and a spirit of benevolence,” she emphasised.

“Skilled and socially conscious doctors have the power to bring about profound change in society. They should play a vital role in nation-building by making constructive use of their position,” President Murmu concluded.
