Doctor Abandons Surgery Midway As Tea wasn’t served, Sparks Probe in Nagpur

In a shocking incident of medical negligence, a doctor at a government-run hospital in Nagpur, specifically at the local health center of Mauda tehsil, abruptly left the operation theater during a scheduled family planning surgery (vasectomy) on November 3. The doctor in question, identified as Tejrang Bhalavi, had already completed surgeries on four women and administered anesthesia to the remaining patients.

What makes this incident particularly alarming is that Dr. Bhalavi’s decision to leave the operation theater was apparently triggered by a request for a cup of tea that went unanswered by the hospital staff. As a result, he left without performing the remaining surgeries, leaving the anesthetized female patients in a vulnerable and dangerous situation.

Upon realizing the gravity of the situation, the hospital administration contacted the district medical officer, who promptly arranged for another doctor to perform the surgeries on the remaining patients. This timely intervention likely prevented a potentially life-threatening situation.

To address this incident, the district administration has initiated an inquiry. A three-member committee has been formed to investigate the case, and appropriate action against Dr. Bhalavi will be determined based on the committee’s findings. Nagpur Zilla Parishad’s CEO, Soumya Sharma, has expressed her concern over the matter, emphasizing its seriousness.

She noted that such behavior from a medical professional is unacceptable, and if doctors are neglecting their duties for trivial reasons like tea, legal action should be taken against them under section 304 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), which relates to culpable homicide not amounting to murder.

This incident highlights the need for a thorough investigation and underscores the importance of maintaining a high standard of professionalism and responsibility in the medical field to ensure the safety and well-being of patients.
