Karnataka Assembly elections 2023: Veteran Congress leader Siddaramaiah is expected to be sworn in as the next chief minister of Karnataka on Thursday. According to sources, he will most likely take the oath alone.
According to insiders, D K Shivakumar, another candidate for the top job, has been given the deputy chief ministerial role along with crucial cabinet ministries in the new government, A meeting of all 135 Congress MLAs is scheduled for Thursday.
Both leaders are in Delhi and have met with senior Congress leaders. Siddaramaiah met Rahul Gandhi again on Wednesday. Afterward, Shivakumar paid a visit to Gandhi at his present address, 10, Janpath.
The difficult choice comes just four days after the Congress won 135 of the 224 seats in a close race between the Congress, the BJP, and the JD (S) ahead of the general elections next year. The BJP finished a distant second with 66 seats, while the JD(S), which had planned to play kingmaker in a hung parliament, had only 19 seats.
State Congress working president Eshwar Khandare and several party MLAs have arrived in Delhi for a meeting with party president Mallikarjun Kharge on Thursday.
While veteran Congress leader Siddaramaiah is regarded as a mass leader, having served a full term in 2018, Shivakumar is known for his great organizational skills and has played an important role in the party’s new phase. At difficult times, he is recognized as Congress’ troubleshooter.
Meanwhile, Congress leader G Parameshwara said on Tuesday that if the party’s high command wants him to lead the government, he is ready. He also stated that the party’s senior command is aware of his contributions to the organisation. “If the high command decides and wants me to lead the government, I’m ready,” the former Deputy Chief Minister told reporters.
