Dinesh Sharma Calls Emergency A Direct Assault On Constitution

BJP Rajya Sabha MP and former Uttar Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Dinesh Sharma on Thursday launched a sharp attack on the Congress while participating in a Samvidhan Hatya Diwas programme in Kanpur. He described the Emergency imposed in 1975 as a direct attack on the Constitution and democratic institutions.

Addressing party workers and citizens, Sharma said the Emergency represented one of the darkest chapters in India’s democratic history. He alleged that the Congress government suspended constitutional freedoms, curtailed civil liberties and attempted to silence every democratic voice during that period.

Dinesh Sharma urged the younger generation to understand the historical significance of the Emergency and remain committed to protecting democratic principles.

Sharma said the observance of Samvidhan Hatya Diwas serves as a reminder of the sacrifices made by people who defended democracy and constitutional values during the Emergency. He asserted that the nation must never forget those events and should continue strengthening democratic institutions.

The BJP leader accused the Congress of repeatedly undermining constitutional values while claiming to protect them. He maintained that the Emergency exposed the party’s disregard for democratic accountability and fundamental rights.

According to Sharma, preserving constitutional ideals remains a collective national responsibility.

The programme formed part of the BJP’s nationwide observance marking the anniversary of the Emergency.

Leaders across the country participated in events remembering those who resisted authoritarian rule and highlighting the importance of constitutional governance.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi also described the Emergency as a direct assault on the Constitution and paid tribute to those who defended democracy.

The event concluded with a renewed appeal to citizens to uphold constitutional values, strengthen democratic institutions and ensure that such a chapter is never repeated in independent India.
