At least four people died and several remain missing after a cloudburst triggered a flash flood in Uttarakhand’s Uttarkashi district on Tuesday.

Horrifying visuals from Dharali village in Uttarkashi show a massive stream of water gushing towards homes, homestays and hotels after the cloudburst in the catchment area of Kheer Ganga river.

Emergency response teams from state and central authorities, including the NDRF, have been deployed to the area.

The Indian Army is also working along with the police and authorities to aid people trapped in the sludge.

The Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) has also deployed a 16-member team, with other teams on standby.

According to Local officials, many buildings have been damaged or swept away by the floods.

Uttarakhand’s Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami said in a social media post that the destruction is ‘extremely sad and distressing’. He added that he is in constant touch with senior officials.

“Relief and rescue operations are being carried out on a war footing”, he added.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has spoken to CM Dhami to review the situation. He assured the people that all possible efforts are being made to help.

Union Minister Amit Shah also spoke to the Uttarakhand Chief Minister to take stock of the situation and reviewed the rescue efforts.
