Devendra Fadnavis Sworn In As Maharashtra Chief Minister

Devendra Fadnavis took the oath as Chief Minister of Maharashtra on Thursday at a grand ceremony held at Azad Maidan, Mumbai.

The event, attended by prominent leaders and personalities, marked Fadnavis’ return to the top post following the BJP-led MahaYuti alliance’s resounding victory in the state elections.

Governor CP Radhakrishnan administered the oath of office to Fadnavis in the presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, and Chief Ministers from various states, including Uttar Pradesh’s Yogi Adityanath and Bihar’s Nitish Kumar.

The ceremony also drew several prominent figures, including cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar and Bollywood icons Shah Rukh Khan, Salman Khan, Ranveer Singh, and Madhuri Dixit.

Devendra Fadnavis: From Nagpur Roots To Maharashtra’s Leadership Helm

Born on 22 July 1970, in Nagpur, Fadnavis has a law degree and postgraduate qualifications in business and project management. He began his political career as a councillor in the Nagpur Municipal Corporation in 1992 and has since been elected as an MLA five times.

Fadnavis served as Maharashtra’s Chief Minister from 2014 to 2019, becoming the state’s second-youngest leader after Sharad Pawar.

During his tenure, he led key initiatives, including the Samruddhi Expressway, Mumbai Next, the Police Digitisation Project, and the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Krishi Sanman Scheme.

In the 2019 political crisis, Fadnavis briefly held the Chief Minister’s post for five days before the Shiv Sena, Congress, and the then-undivided NCP formed the Maha Vikas Aghadi government.

The 2024 Maharashtra Assembly elections marked a significant victory for the BJP-led MahaYuti alliance, which secured 235 seats. The BJP emerged as the largest party with 132 seats, while the Shiv Sena and NCP won 57 and 41 seats, respectively.

In contrast, the Maha Vikas Aghadi suffered a major defeat, with Congress winning just 16 seats, Shiv Sena (UBT) securing 20, and the Sharad Pawar faction of the NCP managing only 10 seats.
