Dense Fog Disrupts Flights In Srinagar; Valley Prepares For Heavy Snowfall

Dense fog disrupted flights in Srinagar on Thursday morning, delaying all early flights at the international airport due to poor visibility. As the Kashmir Valley braces for a fresh spell of snowfall, the Meteorological (MET) Department has predicted moderate to heavy snow starting Saturday evening.

The MET Department highlighted that the most significant activity is expected between January 5 and 6. Officials confirmed the Western Disturbance, which is currently active over Jammu and Kashmir (J&K), will bring snowfall to the valley and rain to the plains. Higher reaches in the Jammu division will also experience snow.

Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, stationed in Srinagar with Cabinet colleagues, assured residents that the administration is fully prepared to handle the upcoming challenges. He emphasized that teams are ready for snow clearance and to address any disruptions to essential services.

Srinagar recorded a minimum temperature of minus 1.6°C, while popular tourist destinations Gulmarg and Pahalgam saw temperatures dip to minus 2.2°C and minus 2.6°C, respectively. Jammu city reported a low of 8.7°C, Katra 11.2°C, Batote 6.5°C, and Banihal and Bhaderwah 3°C.

The 40-day harsh winter period, known as ‘Chillai Kalan,’ began on December 21 and will continue until January 30. During this period, water bodies like lakes and streams remain partially frozen. Residents rely on traditional ways to stay warm, including wearing the Pheran, a loose tweed overgarment, and using the Kangri, an earthen firepot placed under the Pheran for warmth. These traditional methods offer relief amid power shortages in the region.

With snowfall imminent, the Valley remains on high alert, preparing for potential disruptions and the challenges of enduring severe winter conditions.
