Delhi Set To Get New Police Commissioner, Three Senior UT Cadre IPS Officers In Race

With Delhi Police Commissioner Sanjay Arora set to retire on 31 July 2025, the Home Ministry has initiated the selection process for his successor.

The ministry is likely to choose a senior IPS officer from the UT cadre this time. In recent years, officers with paramilitary backgrounds have held the post. But this time, the government may favour experience within the police system.

Sources say the decision may come by mid-July. High-level discussions are already underway within the Home Ministry and Police Department.

Satish Golcha

Satish Golcha is currently the Special Commissioner (Intelligence) in the Delhi Police. He has led key departments like VIP Security, Intelligence, Law and Order, and the Economic Offences Wing.

Officers regard him as a calm and efficient leader. His administrative skills and experience make him a strong contender.

Praveer Ranjan

Praveer Ranjan served as Special Commissioner (Crime) during the farmers’ protest in 2020–21. He also headed the National Investigation Agency (NIA). At present, he works with a central security agency.

He has earned a reputation as a tough, strategic, and balanced officer. His handling of sensitive issues could work in his favour.

Virendra Singh Chahal

Virendra Singh Chahal is serving as a Special Commissioner in the Delhi Police. He earlier worked with the Financial Intelligence Unit, the CBI, and the Intelligence Bureau.

His vast experience and strong grasp of law and order make him a serious candidate. Sources say his performance in multiple agencies has been noted.

Sources in the ministry say they want an officer with a clean image and firm command. The next Police Commissioner must maintain both law and order and political neutrality in a complex city like Delhi.

Delhi’s top police post demands both administrative and strategic skill. The ministry appears focused on a senior, policy-oriented officer with deep field experience.

Final call expected soon

The Home Ministry may announce the new Delhi Police Commissioner by mid-July. Satish Golcha, Praveer Ranjan, and Virendra Singh Chahal are currently the top choices. This time, a senior IPS officer from the UT cadre may once again take charge of Delhi Police.
