The Delhi Police arrested six individuals in two separate cases of voter ID fraud in Shaheen Bagh. The arrests follow complaints from the Electoral Registration Officer (ERO) of Okhla, Vinod Kumar, regarding forged documents used for voter ID applications and address changes.
On December 25, Kumar filed a complaint alleging that four individuals had applied for voter ID cards using forged documents. A case was registered on December 26 under Sections 336 (forgery for cheating) and 340 (using forged documents as genuine) of the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita (BNS) at the Shaheen Bagh police station.
On December 29, Kumar filed another complaint regarding four similar fraudulent voter registration applications. A second case was registered under the same sections of the BNS.
Moreover, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Southeast Delhi), Ravi Kumar Singh, stated that thorough investigations traced the addresses of the accused. The police arrested six individuals involved in both cases
During the investigation, police seized a personal computer used to create the forged documents. Evidence pointed to a systematic misuse of technology to manipulate the electoral registration process.
The fraud involved forging documents such as Aadhaar cards and electricity bills. For instance, Rizwan Ul Haq used Photoshop to manipulate bills, while Rajat Srivastava utilized online PDF editing tools.
Sachin Kumar and Trilok Chand were found involved in document forgery for personal motives, including property transfer.
The Delhi Police stated that efforts are underway to identify and apprehend other individuals connected to the forgery network. The case underscores the need for stringent measures to secure the voter registration process and prevent further misuse.
